How do we 'get ready' for Nursery?

A warm, friendly start to Nursery sets the tone for your child’s journey at St. Mary’s and this begins with a strong partnership between home and school. At St. Mary’s, our priority is to build open, trusting relationships with every family so that together we can understand your child’s needs, celebrate their strengths, and ensure they feel safe, welcomed, and ready to thrive from their very first day.

Pre-skills and Building Independence

You can help your child feel confident and ready by encouraging simple independence skills such as using the toilet on their own, washing their hands, putting on and taking off their coat and beginning to manage their own belongings. Talking together about Nursery, sharing stories, and giving your child opportunities to play with others can also help them feel secure and excited about this new chapter. We encourage all of our families to attend our open evenings, stay and play and drop-in sessions to start to build that crucial relationship with staff from the earliest starting point. You will always be made most welcome!

Read, read, read!

Reading with your child is one of the most powerful gifts you can share. Just five books a day can expose your little one to over a million new words by the time they turn five! An incredible boost for their creativity, language development, listening and speaking skills, confidence, and early storytelling.

At St. Mary’s, reading sits at the heart of everything we do in the EYFS and its importance simply can’t be overstated. You can support this at home by enjoying a story together each evening, involving your child in choosing books and talking about how to hold and open them. Modelling how to follow the text with your finger helps them understand that print carries meaning, even before they can read for themselves. You can even act out stories together, use puppets, or bring in music and song to retell your favourite tales, all of which deepen their understanding, spark imagination, and make reading a joyful, shared experience. Please see some links below to find a selection of great stories for you and your little one.

Supporting Your Child’s Language Development

Modelling clear, confident language is one of the simplest and most effective ways to help your child grow as a communicator. When your little one uses an early or incomplete word, there's no need to correct them or ask them to repeat it. Instead, gently model the full version back to them. For example, if they say "bic bic", you might respond with, "Yes, you'd like a biscuit."

Top Tips for Language Growth

Model full words and sentences so your child hears clear language.
Add a little extra detail when you respond: "Big red bus" instead of just "bus."
Give them time to talk, even if they need a moment to find their words.
Talk throughout the day about what you're doing, seeing, and noticing.
Follow their interests — children learn best when they're engaged and curious.
Creating a language-rich environment at home helps build confidence, vocabulary, and strong communication skills that will support them throughout their early years.
